What Is The EUDR?

Key conditions in the EUDR compliance

Forests provide a wide range of environmental, economic and social benefits that are fundamental to human life. They protect entire ecosystems, provide clean air and prevent the loss of biodiversity, play a vital role in water purification and storage and support the livelihoods and economies of much of the world’s population. Deforestation contributes significantly to the climate crisis, reduces carbon sinks, affects the water cycle and threatens the livelihoods of communities, including indigenous peoples and local communities. They must be harvested and produced in accordance with the relevant legislation of the country of production, which includes not only compliance with environmental regulations, but also those related to land use rights, forest management, labour, tax and/or human rights laws.

The EU Regulation on Deforestation Free Products [EUDR] is a policy framework to address and mitigate the environmental impacts of deforestation. It is an integral part of the EU Green Deal and is in line with the EU’s wider strategy to protect the world’s forests. The regulation sets out criteria for which products can be classified as deforestation free and requires companies to implement sustainable sourcing practices and traceability measures to ensure that their supply chains do not contribute to deforestation. The EUDR regulation brings particularly significant implications, requiring businesses dealing with certain products to conduct even more extensive due diligence on their supply chains. This is an important step to promote transparency and accountability in the production of key commodities and protecting biodiversity.

FSC® [Forest Stewardship Council®]

The Forest Stewardship Council® [FSC®] is an international, non governmental organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. Since its foundation in 1994, FSC® has become the world’s most respected and widely used forest certification system. FSC’s pioneering certification system enables businesses and consumers to choose wood, paper and other forest products made from materials that support responsible forest management. FSC® Chain of Custody Certification verifies that raw materials have been identified and separated from uncertified and uncontrolled material as they move through the supply chain, from the forest to the market.

FSC® forest management certification confirms that the forest is being managed in a way that conserves biodiversity and benefits the lives of local people and workers, while ensuring sustainable economic viability. FSC® Certified forests are managed according to strict environmental, social and economic standards. There are ten principles that every forest management operation must comply with in order to receive FSC® forest management certification. These principles cover a wide range of issues, from maintaining high conservation values to community relations and workers’ rights, to monitoring the environmental and social impacts of the forest management.
